Update on Injured San Francisco Firefighters’ Conditions

(San Francisco, February 6, 2009) – Two of the Six San Francisco Firefighters that were injured in an early morning fire in the Portola District yesterday remain in the hospital this morning.

Lieutenant James App, an 8 year veteran of the Department, suffered 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns as a roof collapsed shortly after crews arrived on the scene. “Lt. App is in good spirits and is receiving excellent care from the staff at the Bothin Burn Center at St. Francis Hospital”, said Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White. Lt. App is expected to be released from the hospital within a few days.

Firefighter/Paramedic Christopher Posey, an 11 year veteran of the Department, suffered life-threatening injuries to his respiratory system. He remains in the Intensive Care Unit at San Francisco General Hospital. “The Department is grateful to the Doctors, Nurses and staff at SFGH for the excellent care that is being provided to Chris”, said Hayes-White.

“We are so moved by the outpouring of support that we are receiving from the public for our injured members. This kind of response means so much to their immediate families and to our Fire Department family”, said the Chief. “Chris and Jim are very dedicated Firefighters and they are loved and respected by the members of this Department. We ask that you continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. This is a difficult time for all of us.”
