Fireworks Safety and NYE 2024 Information

Release Date

As New Year’s Eve approaches, your San Francisco Public Safety Departments remind all celebrants that the use and sale of fireworks are illegal in San Francisco.

Residents and visitors to San Francisco are asked to do their part to prevent fires caused by illegal fireworks. A sanctioned display of fireworks will occur this year. To receive alerts about emergencies in San Francisco during NYE, sign up for Alert SF by texting NYESF to 888-777 or visiting www.alertsf.org

Safety Resources:

Possession of illegal fireworks such as skyrockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, aerial shells, firecrackers, and other types that explode, go into the air, or uncontrollably move on the ground can lead to a possible fine or jail time in the county jail. Even “Safe and Sane” Fireworks, such as firecrackers and sparklers, are considered illegal.

Information on reporting noise:

We are aware of the noise generated by fireworks and how that impacts many communities. If you feel it is necessary to call, noise complaints should be directed to 311.

San Francisco’s public safety partners strongly urge San Franciscans to keep themselves and their neighborhoods safe this year. “If you see something, say something.” In San Francisco, report illegal fireworks only if you see the person lighting them, can describe them, and can give an exact location or address by calling 911.

Information on Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island:

Public visitors to Treasure Island for NYE fireworks viewing are strongly discouraged due to the lack of available viewing and parking with ongoing construction throughout the Island. An increase in traffic along Treasure Island Rd, Avenue of Palms, and 9th Street is still expected. Expect increased SFPD presence on the Island during NYE. Private Security will also patrol the Treasure Island residential neighborhood throughout the night.

Information for Public Safety

San Francisco’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will actively support first responders, coordinate city resources, and provide public information as necessary.

  • Take Public Transit wherever possible. Muni will be free on New Year's Eve
  • Do not use Fireworks; watch our safe and sanctioned free evening event.
