San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) Conducts October 16th Drills
Catastrophic incident response drills commemorating the 21st Anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake
WHAT:
NERT members from all over San Francisco will meet at staging areas in five different locations in the City on October 16th to put their training into action in this three-hour drill. NERT volunteers at each location have planned their drill activities, which may include practicing search and rescue techniques, triaging injured victims, setting up staging areas, and other essential disaster response skills. NERT has held annual Citywide drills since 1992. Between 200 to 300 volunteers participate each year. Since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, NERT has trained over 20,000 citizens to assist the San Francisco Fire Department after a severe earthquake or other major emergency by taking care of themselves, their families, and their neighbors.

About NERT:
The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is an emergency preparedness organization sponsored by the San Francisco Fire Department. The program offers free preparedness training to those who live and work in San Francisco, and provides an organizing framework for neighborhood teams in the city. NERT teams gather after a catastrophic incident to survey their neighborhoods, provide information to the SFFD, conduct light search and rescue and medical triage, help transport victims to medical facilities, and direct untrained volunteers. Since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, NERT has trained over 20,000 citizens to assist the Fire Department after a major disaster by taking care of themselves, their families, and their neighbors. Information on upcoming NERT training can be found on the NERT website, http://www.sf-fire.org//node/219, or by calling 415-970-2022.
