Prevent Utility Line Disruption: Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig!

8-1-1 is the national "Call Before You Dig" number created to help prevent underground utility lines from unintentionally being hit during digging projects. 

Before beginning any project that involves digging, CALL 8-1-1 and your underground utility lines will be MARKED FOR FREE.  This service is for anyone who plans any type of excavation project - no matter how big or small, or whether you are doing the job yourself or hiring professionals.

Excavation crews often make risky assumptions about whether or not they should get utility lines marked due to concerns about project delays, costs, and previous calls about other projects.  Homeowners may assume small projects, like planting trees and shrubs, won't interfere with utility lines.  However, these assumptions can result in life-threatening incidents.

The depth of natural gas pipelines, electric power lines and other utilities buried underground can vary.  They may lie just within a few feet of the surface, and there may be multiple utility lines in one common area.  Accidental contact with these lines can be dangerous and even fatal.  Digging without calling can disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, harm you or those around you, and potentially result in fines and additional repair costs.

California law requires customers to notify utilities at least TWO WORKING DAYS before digging.

Dial 8-1-1, tell the operator where you're planning to dig and what type of work you will be doing. Local utility agencies will be notified about your intent to dig.  In a few days, they'll send a locator to mark the approximate location of your underground lines, pipes and cables - so those doing the digging will know what's below and will be able to dig safely.

Customers can call 8-1-1 from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday, except for holidays.
