On April 11, 2010, at the conclusion of a medical call on 2nd Street, the crew of Engine 1 witnessed the sound of approximately 20-30 gunshots on Natoma Street, between 1st and 2nd Streets. Immediately securing a group of bystanders behind a brick wall, T/Lt. Michael C. Magalong called for a Police response. Under the protection of a single marked Police vehicle, the crew entered the scene, identifying multiple gunshot victims, including one of the shooters, and rendered aid. While administering CPR FF/PM Jonathan T. Baxter observed two masked men near a concrete pillar, one headed toward a gun lying on the ground. With no police officers in the vicinity and fearing for their safety, FF/PM Baxter picked up the firearm, secured it in his turnout coat, and continued administering CPR. The crew of Engine 1 went above and beyond their call of duty, selflessly placing their lives at risk by entering a hostile environment to save the lives of the injured while preventing additional injuries to innocent bystanders.
