4.15 Use of Powder Driven Studs for Hanging Sprinkler Pipe

Reference: 2022 San Francisco Building Code, Chapter 16; 2022 CFC - Chapter 80, CSFM Amendments to 2022 NFPA 13 Chapter 17 and Chapter 18 ; ASCE 7,; ICC AC 193.

Purpose: To provide guidance for selection of attachments and anchors used for hanging and bracing of fire sprinkler piping and appurtenances.

1. The horizontal force factor must be determined using the method outlined in ASCE 7-16.

2. Existing powder driven studs will be allowed to remain unless the pipe is being moved or altered, or the hanger is not holding properly.

3. Powder driven studs are not permitted to be used for sway bracing and/or hangers.

4. All concrete fasteners for hangers and sway bracing must be certified or prequalified for cracked concrete.
