The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is a disaster preparedness organization sponsored by the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD). The program offers free, basic, and advanced preparedness training to those who live and work in San Francisco. Our program provides general personal preparedness education throughout the year and includes sessions taught in Spanish and Cantonese. The goal of the NERT program is to provide an organizing framework for neighborhood teams in the city. Teams gather after a disaster to survey their neighborhoods, provide information to the SFFD, conduct light search and rescue, medical triage, and help transport victims to medical treatment facilities. Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, San Francisco residents organized with the Fire Department to improve citywide disaster response. During the COVID19 response, volunteers were active in over 3,000 unique instances. These trained volunteers supported Department of Public Health at testing and vaccine sites and in calling medical volunteers for availability; Rec and Park in ongoing education and mask distribution in parks; The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in the Community Branch; the EOC Feeding Branch support at the SF Food Bank sites; the State of California in their phone call campaign to reach vulnerable residents; and Department of Emergency Management in door-to-door education campaigns. In NERT’s 30-year history, approximately 30,762 civilians have been trained valuable skills to assist the San Francisco Fire Department after a major disaster by taking care of themselves, their families, and their neighbors. NERT has held annual Citywide drills since 1992.
