Shon Buford is a dedicated public servant with a lifelong commitment to civic engagement. Born and raised in San Francisco, Shon joined the San Francisco Fire Department in 1993 and has since made significant contributions to the department and his community.

Throughout his career, Shon has worked in various districts of the city, including the Southeast, South of Market, and Mission Districts. His experience includes serving on Rescue 2 and Engine 1. In 2012, Shon's hard work and leadership skills earned him a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant. Seven years later, in 2019, he was appointed Captain, further solidifying his path within the department.

Shon's passion for advocating for the rights and well-being of his fellow firefighters led him to serve on the Executive Board of Local 798 for 18 years. During his tenure, he held various positions, starting as a Director, then Treasurer, and ultimately serving as President, showcasing his commitment to representing and advancing the interests of his fellow firefighters.

On November 28th, 2022, Shon was appointed Assistant Deputy Chief of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In this role, he plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive work environment within the San Francisco Fire Department. Shon oversees the outreach, recruitment, and onboarding process for potential entry-level recruits while collaborating with various department workgroups, the Division of Training, and community partners to develop innovative pipelines and pathways for a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Outside of his duties in the fire department, Shon is also an esteemed member of the Department of Justice Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Review Board. This prestigious committee, created by Congress in 2001, recognizes extraordinary acts of heroism and bravery demonstrated by public safety officers across the nation. Shon's involvement in this board highlights his commitment to honoring and celebrating the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to keep our communities safe.

Shon is not only committed to his career but also to his family. He currently resides in San Francisco with his wife Julia and their young daughter, cherishing the importance of a loving and supportive home environment.

With a Bachelor of Science in Management, specializing in Organizational Behavior and Leadership from the University of San Francisco, Shon combines his academic knowledge with his extensive practical experience to make a positive impact in his role as Assistant Deputy Chief.
