Surveillance Technology Reports

A “Surveillance Technology” is defined in the Surveillance Ordinance as:

  • A software, electronic device, system using an electronic device, or similar device
  • used, designed, or primarily intended to
  • collect, retain, process, or share
  • audio, electronic, visual, location, thermal, biometric, olfactory or similar information
  • specifically associated with, or capable or being associated with, any individual or group

As part of legislation passed by the Board of Supervisors and signed by the Mayor back in 2019, City Departments possessing, using, or proposing the use of Surveillance Technologies must submit policies for use of these technologies for approval through the City’s Committee on Information Technology (COIT) and Board of Supervisors. This has been established as Chapter 19B in the City’s Administrative Code, Acquisition of Surveillance Technologies
