2017 Class C Award - RC2
On October 25, 2017, crews were dispatched to a high-speed, two-vehicle collision into a tree involving three victims. While two victims were quickly extricated, one remained trapped in a vehicle that was essentially wrapped around his body. The trapped victim could not feel his legs, both femurs appeared to be fractured in multiple places and he was losing a significant amount of blood. The extrication operation was extremely difficult and lasted over two hours, during which time the crews of RS01, T12 and D02 utilized extrication methods beyond normal procedures and showed incredible composure, methodical decision-making and great physical stamina. As crews worked to extricate the patient, M82, E12, E22 and RC02 worked to keep the patient alive by providing full medical care in a professional, compassionate and proactive way. If it weren’t for the teamwork and quality of care provided, the victim would not have been able to walk into SFFD Headquarters one year later to show his appreciation.
