2017 Class D Certificate of Commendation - RC3
On August 18, 2017, SFFD was dispatched to an unspecified medical call at what turned out to be an unlicensed board and care home. As required, they contacted Adult Protective Services. Not wanting to merely report this dangerous facility and recognizing the severity and potential scope of the situation, they also contacted SFPD and a Paramedic Captain. Their insistence that this facility was mistreating its residents resulted in a multi-agency collaboration that ultimately had seven medically neglected patients transferred to hospitals within hours. The manager of the site was arrested, fire code violations were noted, and those self-sufficient individuals who remained on site were followed up with by APS. These front line paramedics recognized a dangerous situation and kept these individuals from further harm.
