2017 Class D Certificates of Commendation
The 2017 Tubbs Wildfire resulted in over 20 deaths and destroyed over 5,300 structures. What follows is a small account of how crews rose to the call of mutual aid during the most destructive wildfire in California history. In the early morning hours of October 9, 2017, Strike Team XSF2255A, consisting of E07, E11, E15, E37 and Berkeley E06, reported to their Santa Rosa staging location only to find it fully engulfed by wildfire. Crews had limited on-site resources and no initial communication with local incident commanders. Over the next 72 sleepless hours, crews battled flames on the front line while propane tanks and ammunition exploded. They fought tirelessly and successfully to save hundreds of homes and businesses from complete destruction. Their deeds on those grim days are too numerous to fit on a plaque, but will forever be memorialized in the hearts of those citizens they protected.
