2019 Class D Unit Citation - B9, RS2, E15, E33
On January 16, 2019, E33 responded to a fire with heavy smoke from all windows, fire through the roof, and immediate rescues needed. FF Lee and PX/FF Vanderklugt grabbed the 22’ extension ladder and threw it to the 2nd floor window where they assisted an elderly resident trapped by heavy smoke and fire. The crew of E33 then deployed a ready line into the front door of the residence. Making an initial knockdown of the fire, they encountered an unconscious victim 10 feet into the residence. Members of E33 and E15 dragged the victim to the street and initiated CPR. Arriving on scene, BC Schwartz called for a 2nd alarm. ISS Simms gained access through an exposure building and assisted 6 trapped residents to safety from the back yard. E15 arrived to supply E33 and were directed to lead a 2nd ready line into the 1st floor where they encountered hoarding conditions, extricated multiple victims while continuing forward with their fire suppression assignment. With limited space to search, no hose line to protect them, and a compromised exit, Rescue 2 coordinated the rescue of 5 civilians out of the building. In all 11 people rescued, 20 displaced and only 5 injured. The quick action and coordinated efforts of these fire crews lead to the zero fatalities.
