Description

On October 4, 2019, a call was received for a distressed and suicidal individual who climbed over the rail on the Golden Gate Bridge. The individual retreated to the lower structural span below the bridge, crawled out over the mid span and curled up in a ball inside one of the girders. RS1, with the assistance of GGB maintenance staff, brought the individual over a 2’ girder 300 feet over open water. The individual was secured to a stokes stretcher and lifted up over the side of the bridge 30’ to the above pedestrian walkway, all over open water. FF Murphy and FF Marshall provided technical support above assisting bridge crews and FF Mancinelli and FF Colder worked below the bridge with bridge maintenance to secure the victim. The crew of Rescue 1 with Golden Gate Bridge employee assistance successfully rescued the patient under dangerous conditions and at great personal risk.
