The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office (DEIO)
The San Francisco Fire Department's firefighting, and emergency management services (EMS)—serve a crucial role in the safety and well-being of our shared San Francisco community. San Francisco's residents, citizens and public officials have placed a renewed focus on improving agencies’ relations with their local communities by ensuring that first responders reflect the populations they serve. The potential benefits of increasing diversity and moving toward greater representation is known to promote more secure and rewarding employment opportunities to historically underrepresented populations, thus having implications for local economic and workforce development.
To ensure the continued efforts of public agencies to curtail workforce discrimination and gain a better understanding of the benefits of a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace the City and County of San Francisco's Office of Racial Equity's (ORE) legislation mandates change through specific strategies, actions, and learning and evaluation through public-facing reports and scorecards.
The SFFD in accordance with the ORE's mandate has formed the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office (DEIO) to coordinate various activities to identify challenges to diversity, equity and inclusion and implement promising practices that the Department, affinity groups and partner organizations can leverage to promote a professional culture of resilience and wellbeing, free of discrimination and or marginalization.
