Neighborhood Emergency Response Team

Get Prepared. Get Involved!

Thank you for your interest in the San Francisco Fire Department Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT), a community based training program dedicated to a neighbor-helping-neighbor approach.

NERT is a free training program for individuals, neighborhood groups and community-based organizations in San Francisco.  Through this program, individuals will learn the basics of personal preparedness and prevention.  The training also includes hands-on disaster skills that will help individuals respond to a personal emergency as well as act as members of a neighborhood response team.

San Francisco is made up of many neighborhoods. We are training San Francisco residents to be one ready community when it counts. Together we can create a lifeline between your family and neighbors, and the City's emergency responders.

We invite you to learn more about the NERT team and how to get involved.

Anyone who lives or works in the City of San Francisco is welcome to become a NERT.

No. You do not need any prior experience to join.

Begin by visiting our website calendar to find a “NERT Basic Training” class that fits your schedule.

Once you find a class, register through the NERT Member Portal.

If you are registering for the first time, select “Register Email / Set Password” to create your account. Existing members may simply log in.

Complete your Profile. You will not be able to sign up for classes until all required fields are filled out.

Once completed, click the green button labeled “Click here to open my NERT profile and Event Registration.” Then select “Events” (on a computer, this appears on the left side of the screen).

Under “Events,” browse upcoming NERT trainings. If you are a first-time volunteer, select your preferred NERT Basic class and choose “Register Me." A pop-up will appear with all available classes; check the box for all 6 classes. Complete the process by clicking, "Check box(es) then Click to Register."

You will receive a confirmation email with the class dates and times.

NERT Basic Training includes six sessions, each 4 hours long, for a total of 24 hours.

Yes, but you must complete all six classes to graduate. You have six months to make up any missed class(es).

For example, if you missed Class #4, you may register for just Class #4 with any other session on the Member Portal.

Make sure to email the NERT office at sffdnert@sfgov.org with your make‑up class date(s) so we can bring your graduation materials.
